Myrtle communis is a highly fragrant compact herbaceous bush/shrub that boasts whimsical white flowers and evergreen foliage. It grows in most any soil medium (chalk, clay, loam, sand,etc.). Can be used as a wind break. Grows to 6 ft tall and 8 ft wide. The size can be controlled by pruning or potting.
The leaves, flowers and bright purple-colored berries are all edible. …The strongly flavored leaves are used as a bay-leaf substitute, often used to flavor meats. White Mirto wine (also, Mirto liqueur) is made from the berries and the leaves.

Germination Procedure: Soak seeds for 24 hours before sowing and/or before cold stratifying. Sow soaked seeds in winter for spring germination. Otherwise, apply cold/moist stratification in the freezer for 2-3 months, then press the seeds 1/4 an inch deep, and tamp the soil (barely covering them but keeping the soil bed tight).
