Considered a holy tree in many religions. Burning Camphor or camphor wood from the camphor tree has a unique quality of cleansing the air and being the only smoke from wood-burning that doesn’t burn the eyes. Likewise it is used in many temples throughout the world.
C. camphora Uses:
Burn Camphor oil in an oil lamp to purify the air in your home and leave a clean crisp fragrance. Indeed, burning camphor oil prevented the spread of illness, saving many during the deadly black plague. Likewise, camphor oil is often sold as an eucalyptus oil substitute (eucalyptus also kills germs, cleanses the lungs and the air).
Still today, camphor is used in the perfume industry, vapor rubs, and in embalming fluid.
Camphor is an all natural insecticide. It is an effective mosquito repellent and it kills both ants and bed bugs!
Camphor trees are large and fast-growing tropical trees (On average, expect 2 ft. of growth per year). They grow from 50-70 ft tall, although their size can be controlled by planting Camphor in a container. Likewise, some plant them as bonsai.
The small white flowers of the tree bloom around the month of September and occur in clusters. Next, the flowers drop and the tree creates fruit berries with seeds. The black fruit berries are very attractive to birds as a food source. The berries readily set seed into the ground.
Cinnamomum camphora will thrive in a variety of soil types: clay, loam, sand, acidic alkaline, etc. as long as there is adequate drainage.
Note: Camphor is deemed an invasive species in Florida and Texas due to it’s ability to rapidly take over a space. It is so useful however so it has not been banned.
Germination Procedure: Soak Camphor seeds in hydrogen peroxide for 25 minutes. Next, apply cold/moist stratification for 2 months to simulate the cold season (otherwise, plant in winter for spring sprouting). When temperatures are warm (at least 65 degrees), sow seeds 1/2 an inch into the soil, lightly cover. Germination time: 3-6 months.
