A fast-growing cherry tree that produces delicious sweet fruits. Has dark and glossy ornamental leaves and produces single white flowers in May-June before setting fruit. Cherries are red and then turn black when fully ripe.
Prunus serotina grows to a maximum height of 60 ft tall. It provides fall colored leaves that typically turn yellow. It is a native to the United States and lives a long lifespan.

Caring for Black Cherry Trees:
Prune in early spring or right after buds appear. The take home here is to avoid pruning before harsh winter temperatures. There is no need to fertilize your cherry tree unless it stopped producing fruits for a year. When this happens (every 5 or so years) then it is time to fertilize. When necessary, fertilize in the spring with a low nitrogen fertilizer. Cherry trees do not like a lot of nitrogen.
Germination Procedure: Plant in fall for overwintering and spring sprouts. Otherwise, apply 4 months of cold stratification to simulate the winter season. Pro-tip: Snip the end of the seed stones at the very end to create an opening for the emerging seedling. Doing so saves a lot of time that it would have taken for the stone to soften and crack on it’s own. Finally, sow seed stones 1/2-inch deep in med-warm temperatures.
