Even though this “true weed” is often overlooked for both its medicinal and nutritional qualities, it is a VERY valuable plant. Plantain is high in beta carotene, ascorbic acid, vitamin K, calcium, and much more. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anti-hemorrhagic, analgesic, and expectorant effects. The leaves-traditonally used as an emollient, and itch and sting reliever-contain allantoin, promotes wound healing, cell regeneration, and can even soften the skin. Chew it up and put it on bug bites and stings, it will help to draw the toxins out. If chewing it doesn’t sound like something you want to do, why not grab a bar of our Plantain Soap with added Lavender and Helichrysum essential oils, and Aloe Vera…and apply to all of your cuts and abrasions, and bug bites and stings? Follow it up with an application of our Plantain Salve and you’ll be on your way to soothing and nourishing your skin. While you’re at it, why not add a couple of leaves to your salads for a little extra nutrition, Just be sure that they are harvested from a reliably clean area.

~~~At Living in the Past, we want you to enjoy our products as much as we do! We strive to use the purest and most natural ingredients available to us. That being said, it is important to check the ingredients of our products before you purchase them. Allergic reactions to any natural ingredient is possible and can commonly occur. A list of ingredients and a description of some their attributes is listed below. The information on the essential oils used in this soap was found in “The Encyclopedia of Essential Oils” by Julia Lawless and other up to date sources. While it is fun to learn about the historic uses of essential oils and herbs, I am providing the information strictly for informative purposes only. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Only a very few Essential oils should be used topically without being diluted in a carrier oil— in soap these oils are highly diluted.
~Ingredients~
~ALMOND OIL~
Almond Oil is an excellent emollient, which is known to soften, soothe, and condition the skin.
~ALOE VERA~
This cactus-like plant has natural healing properties. Aloe Vera helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance. It stimulates blood circulation while tightening and rejuvenating the skin. The long, fleshy leaves, edged with small thorns, contain a greenish, translucent salve-like juice. Split open an aloe leaf to expose the gelatinous juice, then rub it on the skin to soothe minor burns, sunburn, wrinkles and insect bites. Many cooks keep a small potted aloe vera handy in the kitchen, so that they can quickly rub on the healing juice if the accidentally burn themselves. The fresh juice is also said to help heal wounds by preventing and drawing out infection.
~CASTOR OIL~
Castor Oil acts as a humectant by helping your skin attract and retain moisture. It also gives the soap big fluffy bubbles.
~COCONUT OIL~
Coconut Oil is obtained from dried coconut meat. It is a good moisturizer when used in small quantities. Its saturated nature makes a very hard bar of soap with lots of bubbles.
~LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL~
*Herbal/Folk Tradition
There are many different types of Lavender Essential Oil, and for the most part they all have the same properties. Lavender has a well-established history in folk remedies, and it’s scent is still well known around the world. Lavender EO among it’s many historic uses, was used to ‘comfort the stomach’, as a cosmetic water, an insect repellent, to scent linen, and as a reviving, yet soothing oil. ‘The essential oil, or a spirit of lavender made from it, proves admirably restorative and tonic against faintness, palpitations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness, spasms and colic…A few drops
of lavender in a hot footbath has a marked influence in relieving fatigue. Outwardly applied, it relieves toothache, neuralgia, sprains and rheumatism. In hysteria, palsy and similar disorders of debility and lack of nerve power, lavender will act as a powerful stimulant.’
~PLANTAIN INFUSED OLIVE OIL~
Groves of olive trees, some of them very ancient, can be found in all of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The strikingly gnarled trees with their long narrow leaves, gray-green on one side and silvery white of the other, are a memorable part of the landscapes of Italy, Spain, southern France, Greece and the islands of the Aegean. Some of the oldest trees alive today are said to be over 1000 years old! The olive is a symbol of peace, wealth, and safe travel, and is significant in many of the worlds religions.
*Today*
-It is an excellent source of vitamins and protein. The fruit can be pressed to yield a rich, pale green oil that can be used in cooking, and massaged into the skin for healing. Olive Oil is a very good moisturizer because it attracts external moisture, holds the moisture close to the skin, and forms a breathable film to prevent the loss of internal moisture. It does not block the natural functions of the skin. Skin is able to sweat, release sebum, and shed dead skin.
~SODIUM HYDROXIDE AND DISTILLED WATER~
No true soap is ever made without the use of lye. In the process of soapmaking, the lye combines with the fats/oil through the chemical process of saponification, thereby creating a totally new substance…soap.
~VITAMIN E OIL~
Vitamin E (Tocopherols), is known for it’s antioxidant properties. It is a natural preservative that softens dry skin.
