Grows fast: 2-3 ft per year! Will grow up to 40-50 ft at full maturity. Most are cut down before then and used as Christmas trees. This beautiful evergreen is cold-tolerant. The wood is a beautiful light brown. Bark is tidy-looking. Branches fork and cones are elongated.
Picea abies makes for a wonderful addition to your front or backyard. If you live in a warmer climate and wish to grow it, be sure it is next to the shade of a tall structure that will block the sun for half of the day or planted under the shade of larger trees and water heavily. Doing so will avoid heavy heat and save the tree from distress.
If planting in rows for a privacy screen, use a 12 ft spacing.
How to Care for Picea abies Norway Spruce Trees
Grows best in high nitrogen, acidic soils. Choose a high nitrogen, low phosphorous fertilizer. Slow release fertilizer is best applied in Spring. Ensure trees stay well-watered for their first year. Water new seedlings when the top layer of soil is dry (1 gallon per watering is a good rule of thumb).
Germination Procedure: Soak seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow seeds by gently pressing them into the surface of the soil as they require sunlight to sprout. Tip: Ensure you do not water with a heavy pour so to avoid burying them into the darkness of the soil away from the light. Germination time: 30 days.
