In Asia, Jiaogulan is used in Chinese medicine for high cholesterol, high blood pressure,heart, anxiety, type 2 diabetes, anti-obesity, inflammation and dyslipidemia. In Aruveyda, it is listed as an anti-oxidant adaptogen herb. Studies indicate it increases AMPK, which is a molecule that signals metabolism. Likewise many have reported weight loss associated with its consumption.
The whole plant is used as a tonic. The leaves taste like sweet cucumber.
It is deciduous, and dioecious and it grows super fast. You’ll want to either plant this herb in a pot, give it a trellis system or plant it in a location allotted for it to grow to it’s full potential away from your other plants. It’s care needs are very basic. Water and well draining soil will do fine.
Germination Procedure: Soak seeds in a cup of water 24 hrs before sowing. Sow seeds 1/16 inch deep taking care not to fully cover them from the light. The seeds need sunlight hitting them and the moisture from the soil to sprout. Seeds germinate in temperatures around 70 degrees. Germination time is erratic (2-6 weeks).
