A favorite fragrance of many…this aromatic perennial tropical herb plant is the source of commercial patchouli fragrance oils and waters. Pogostemon cablin is also medicinal and is a very effective all natural insect repellent. The seeds are very tiny however expect these patchouli plants to grow 3 ft tall. Plants can be potted or planted in the ground. Crush leaves in an oil press to extract the oils at home. Add oils to candles, hair rinses and soaps for an aromatherapy experience that awakens the senses.
How to Care for True Patchouli Pogostemon cablin Plants
These plants thrive in the heat and should be covered during a frost. Mulching around the plant is recommended. Applying a water soluble fertilizer once every two months is recommended. If potted, fertilize more frequently (once a month).
Germination Procedure: Prepare dampened soil by fluffing it and then packing it down tightly before sprinkling the seeds on the surface. Do not bury the seeds as they sprout over the top of the soil in warm temperatures, under the sunlight. Take care not to water with a hose so the seeds do not fall into the darkness of the soil. Instead, use a mister to keep the seeds and soil moist. Germination time: 45 days.
