Found native in Peru and South America, these fast-growing, self-fertile trees grow vigorously in subtropical to tropical climates. The trees can be potted in a large pot and will still bear many fruits. Tree Tomatoes grow in sand, clay and loamy soils and do best in full sun.
Great news: Tamarillo Cyphomandra seeds are easy to germinate! Even a beginner gardener can grow this one.
How to Use:
Use the fruit like a tomato. Slice it for salads. The tamarillos can be sun-dried and used like sun-dried tomatoes or canned. The acidic-tasting fruits can be sweetened with sugar and used in jellies and preserves as well.
Tamarillo fruit is low in carbs and rich in vitamins A, C, E and iron.
Tree Tomato Tamarillo (Detail):
White to pink flowers clusters appear in bunches of 10-50. The flowers are pleasantly fragrant and showy. Once the flowers drop, the fruit (clusters ranging from 3-12) appear where the flowers were. The trees bear fruit in as early as 6 months time and continue fruiting for up to 10 years. The maximum height that tree tomatoes reach is 16 ft. tall.
Germination Procedure: Sow 1/3 of an inch, in soil temperatures that are warm (75 degrees and up). Keep seeds and soil moist. Germination time: 3-5 weeks. Tip: To speed up germination time, place the seeds in the Fastzer for 24 hours before sowing.
