Fresh garden rue seeds for you to plant in your perennial herb garden this year. Also known as Common Rue, Herb of Grace and Ruta Graveolens; this attractive yellow-flowered rue with blue-green foliage is popular in homeopathy and herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory effects on the circulatory system and more. The rutin content in the leaves are responsible for the anti-inflammatory effects.
While some add garden rue leaves to salad mixes, it is not recommended to consume rue leaves in high quantities.
If using the leaves for salad, simply sprinkle a few of the bitter leaves onto the salad mix as more of an accent rather than choosing them as the main salad ingredient. As with most medicinal plants, over-ingesting is no longer a health benefit but a detriment.
Common Rue as an Insect Repellent
Another noteworthy use for Ruta graveolens is it’s use as an all-natural insect repellent! Likewise, it is useful when planted or potted next to an outdoor sitting area.
Garden Rue is both deer-resistant and drought tolerant!
How to Care for Common Garden Rue Plants:
These herbaceous plants grow well in many soil types. Even rocky dry type soils make for a suitable foundation for these strong rooted plants. For the best results, plant in slightly acidic to alkaline soil. Just the same, most wildflower herb perennials such as this one will thrive in poor to low nutrient soils and grow just fine once started. Companion plant with Sage or Corriander. Prune branches a half a foot in spring for renewed growth.
Germination Procedure: No stratification or scarification required. Simply sow rue seeds on the surface of the soil as, sunlight is required for them to germinate. Keep seeds and soil moist. Sow seeds during warmer temperatures and expect seeds to sprout within 1-4 weeks time.
