Campsis radicans, commonly called
trumpet vine or trumpet creeper, is a dense, vigorous, multi-stemmed,
deciduous, woody, clinging vine that attaches itself to structures and climbs
by aerial rootlets. It is native to the eastern and southeastern U. S. Species
plants rapidly grow to 30-40′ high. Compound, odd-pinnate leaves (to 15” long)
are shiny dark green above and glabrous dull green below. Each leaf has 7 to 11
elliptic to oblong leaflets (to 4″ long) with serrated margins. Leaves
turn yellow in fall. Clusters (terminal cymes) of red trumpet-shaped flowers
(to 3” long) appear throughout the summer (June to September). Flowers are very
attractive to hummingbirds
Growing Instructions
Trumpet vine seeds have a dormancy
period. They need a period of chilling which simulates winter conditions to
break their dormancy.
1. Place trumpet vine seeds in a plastic
bag and seal it. Store the bag in a refrigerator for two months.
2. Fill a pot with potting soil.
3. Sow the seeds on the soil and cover
them with a thin layer of soil.
4. Water the container and leave it to
drain.
5. Put the pot in a warm, sunny area.
6. Water the pot regularly so that the
soil is moist but not wet.
7. The seedlings can be transplanted
when they are a few inches tall.
