White Stopper is an evergreen,
upright shrub or a small tree with dark green leaves, fragrant white flowers
and edible, dark red or black fruits. It is one of Florida’s native tropical
trees and it grows in coastal forests and thickets. It ranges from Central
Florida and South Florida to the Caribbean region and Central America. It is one
of the common understory trees of the tropical hammocks in South Florida. White
Stopper is tolerant of wind, drought and salt and it is easy to grow. The leaves
are thick, leathery and waxy and the new growth is pink or burgundy in color. The
flowers are in small clusters in the leaf axils. They are produced throughout
the year but mainly in the spring and summer. The flowers are followed by the
fruits, which are round berries. The fruits are sweet and edible. The fruits
are great for attracting birds. It has hard, strong wood that is used in
cabinetry. White stopper has attractive foliage and fruits, is of modest size
and appropriate as a residential street tree, in parking lot islands, small
lawns, and as a screen or hedge. It is also grown as a bonsai plant.
Growing Instructions
1. Put a mixture of
potting soil and sand or perlite into a pot with drainage holes in the base.
2. Sow the seeds on
the soil.
3. Cover the seeds
with a layer of soil that is 0.5 inches thick.
4. Water the seeds.
Keep the soil moist but not wet.
5. Put the pots in
an area in light shade.
6. The seeds take 1
month to germinate.
7. When the plants
are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
