The Tibetan
Blue Poppy has large flowers of an amazing shade of true blue. It is one of the
most sought-after treasures of the botanical world. The flowers range from
light blue to deep sky blue. They are 3-5 inches across and are born on 2-foot-tall
stems. Plants form a basal rosette of leaves. The stems and leaves have golden
hairs. It prefers evenly moist, peaty, well-drained soil and bright, indirect
sunlight. It likes cool, woodland conditions. Flowers begin in late spring and mid-summer.
It is native to the lush, mountainous regions of southwestern Tibet. It is a
perennial. Hardy in zones 4-7.
Grow in loose,
peaty, moderately rich, slightly acidic, very well-drained but evenly moist
soils in part shade. Plants will not survive unless properly sited in a
suitable climate. Plants prefer cool humid shade in woodland-like conditions,
with summer temperatures typically occurring below 80 degrees F. and with
winter temperatures remaining mild. Part shade helps insulate plants from the
heat of the sun. During the growing season, soils must not be allowed to dry
out. Mulch will prevent some loss of moisture. However, soils must have
superior drainage and some soil dryness in winter to prevent the onset of root
rot. Impressive flowering poppy for part shade areas of the landscape. Hardy in
zones 4-8.
