The Plantain
Lily is an herbaceous perennial from Asia that is grown for its large, lush
leaves and its attractive stalks of light purple to white flowers. It is grown in
temperate and subtropical regions as a bedding plant. The flowers attract bees
and hummingbirds. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils
in part shade to full shade. Tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. Does
best in rich, moist, organic soils in light, sun-dappled, part shade. Tolerates
full shade. Plants need consistent moisture during the growing season. Water is
best applied directly to the soil beneath the leaves. Hardy in zones 3-8.

Instructions for the Plantain Lily
1. The seeds
like moist, well-drained soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half
sand, perlite or vermiculite. Peat moss is also a good growing medium for
hostas. Put the soil in a pot. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not
wet. 2. Put the seeds on the soil. 3. Cover the seeds with a layer of soil
that is ¼ of an inch thick. 4. Water the seeds. The soil mixture has to be
kept moist for the seeds and seedlings to grow. 5. Place the pots in an area
with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade. The seeds 6. When the
seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
