The Ocotillo is
a desert plant that is renowned for its peculiar growth form and its
spectacular clusters of brilliant red, tubular flowers. This unusual shrub has a
vase-shaped form with many long, spiny stems that arise from the base of the
plant. The stems are nearly straight or sinuous and crooked and they are unbranched
or sparsely branched with a few short branches near the ends of the stems. The
flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds and bees. It is native to the southwestern
United States and northern Mexico. Hardy in zones 7-10.
Growing
Instructions for the Ocotillo
1. The seeds
like sandy, well-drained soil. Fill a pot with moist cactus mix or used a
mixture of sand and peat moss, perlite or vermiculite. Use a pot that has
drainage holes in the bottom. 3. Put the seeds on the surface of the soil. The
seeds need light to germinate so don’t cover them with soil. 4. Water the
seeds. Keep the soil moist but not wet. 5. Place the pots in an area with
warm temperatures in in full sun or part shade. The seeds germinate in a
few weeks. 7. When the seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be
transplanted.
