The Japanese Crepe Myrtle is a deciduous, multi-stemmed tree with a vase-shaped
form and attractive, cinnamon-colored bark. The bark peels off in strips
revealing the light brown or greenish-brown inner bark. It has white flowers
that are smaller than those of the more commonly grown crape myrtle (L. indicum)
but they are produced in greater abundance. This species is more cold hardy than L.
indicum and it is resistant to powdery mildew. Thus, it has been used to create
a series of very popular hybrids with the crape myrtle that combine the cold
hardiness and mildew resistance of L. fauriei with the larger, more showy and
more colorful flowers of L. indicum. These
hybrids, the “Indian Tribe” hybrids (including the very popular
‘Natchez’) are some of the most commonly cultivated crape myrtles. It grows up
to 20-30 ft (6-11 m) tall, arching branches, rounded
outline. Attractive peeling copper-colored bark, excellent winter
feature. Leaves simple, opposite, light green. Flowers
white, on 5-10 cm panicles. The fruit is a capsule, green and succulent at
first, then ripening to dark brown or black on drying. Full sun, moist
well-drained soil. It has a fast growth rate. Grow in sunny site with
well-drained soil in a spacious location where the copper-colored trunks will
be a feature. It is reported to be moderately salt tolerant and is recommended
for zones 6b to 9. It is native to Yakushima Island, Japan.
