The Fiji Fan
Palm is a wonderful palm tree that is native to the Lau group of islands in
Fiji. It has large, flat, rich green and glossy leaves of an incredible beauty.
The leaves are finely pleated and divided for about a third of their length
into segments. Flowers are on long, curved stalks that extend farther than the
leaves. Fruits are globose, red drupes. It is a hardy, robust palm that is
grown in the tropics around the world. Hardy in zones 10-12.
Growing
Instructions for the Fiji Fan Palm
1. Soak the
seed in water for several hours. 2. The seeds like moist, well-drained soil.
Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite or vermiculite.
Put the soil in a pot. Water the mixture so that it is moist but not wet. 3.
Put the seeds on the soil. 4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil. 5.
Water the seeds. 6. Place the pots in an area with warm temperatures in full
sun or part shade. The seeds germinate in 30 days. 7. When the seedlings are a
few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
