Long red cayenne peppers (Capsicum annuum) are what many people picture when they think of traditional hot peppers. The thin, cherry red peppers are often dried in ropes for use later in the season, and the fiery flavor adds spice to many traditional dishes. These versatile plants can be grown in USDA zones 5 through 12, although they need to be started indoors in all but the warmest climates due to the 70-day season before harvest.
Start the pepper seeds indoors eight weeks before your average last frost date in the spring. Fill seed starting pots three-quarters full with potting soil. Place two long red cayenne pepper seeds on top of the soil in each pot, spaced equal distance between themselves and the edge of the pot. Sprinkle 1/4 inch of potting soil on top of the seeds. Water the pots thoroughly.
