The Beauty Leaf or Alexandrian Laurel is a tropical tree with shiny, rich green leaves that is widely cultivated in warm regions around the world for its evergreen foliage. It has a short, stout trunk or multiple stems, spreading branches and a broad, rounded or irregular canopy. Leaves are leathery, oblong and in pairs on the twigs. They have many fine parallel veins. Clusters of fragrant, white flowers with many orange stamens appear on the branches once or twice a year. The flowers are about an inch across. Fruits are light green, globose drupes with 1 seed. They are in small, pendant clusters. The large, globose seeds contain a greenish-yellow oil known as tamanu oil, which is used medicinally and as a fuel. The timber has been used in shipbuilding. C. inophyllum is native to southern Asia, eastern Africa and the Pacific Islands. It grows in coastal regions and nearby lowland forests. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils and is salt and wind tolerant. Hardy in zones 10-11.
Growing
Instructions
The seeds have
a hard seed coat that has to be treated, or scarified, in order for water to
enter the seeds so that they can sprout.
1. Scarify the
seeds by nicking or sanding the seed coat.
2. Soak the
seed in water for 24 hours.
3. The seeds
like moist soil. Prepare a mixture of half potting soil and half sand, perlite
or vermiculite. Put the soil in a pot.
4. Put the seeds
on the soil.
5. Cover the
seeds with a thin layer of soil.
6. Water the
seeds.
7. Place the
pots in an area with warm temperatures in full sun or part shade.
8. When the
seedlings are a few inches tall, they can be transplanted.
