Acacia (Wattle) extract is a plant extract rich in tannins obtained from the Black Acacia (Acacia mearnsii De Wild). This species is also named “Black Wattle”.
Acacia works best on cotton and other cellulosic fibers this is because it has a high tannin content.
Acacia is very rich in tannins which allows the pre-treatment of the cellulosic vegetable fibers to improve the fixation of the mordant during the mordanting process.
Acacia extract also allows one to dye with or without mordant. The shades obtained cover a wide range from beige to brown, grey and almost black with the iron sulfate.
The acacia extract contains 60 – 65 % of condensed tannins.
The black locust tree represents the biggest source of plant tannins in the world. It is native of the southeast of Australia and was introduced into numerous tropical and subtropical regions.

How much dye to purchase:
All natural dyeing is based on wog or wof – weight of goods or weight of fabric
For example 1 pound of fabric = 16 ounces or 453.59237 grams
Round up to 500 grams
multiply the % of Acacia x the wog/wof
For 1 pound Cotton
18% x 500 grams = 6 Tablespoons or 3 ounces (90grams) extract for dark
12% x 500 grams = 4 Tablespoons or 2 ounces (60 grams) extract for medium
5% x 500 grams = 5 Teaspoons or .88 ounce (25 grams) extract for light
