Description:
Datura discolor, also known as Sacred Datura or desert
thorn-apple, is a bushy herbaceous annual plant with dark green leaves and
white trumpet flowers that are occasionally tinged violet inside. The Sacred
Datura is related to brugmansia, belladonna and henbane and is found in the
American Southwest, in northern Mexico and the Caribbean Islands. The plant can
grow to 4.5 feet (1.4 m) tall. Datura discolor has large flowers (170 mm in
diameter). The flowers are very short-lived and blossom for only one night and
wither the following day. However, the plant produces numerous blooms that
continue over the course of the season. They have a sweet and delicate scent.
Datura discolor fruits are green and spiny and contain many black seeds.
WARNING: Despite this plant’s beauty, all parts including the seeds contain
toxic tropane alkaloids that are poisonous if ingested. Do not ingest for any
reason and keep away from curious pets and children. The effects of consuming
D. discolor include delirium, intense hallucinations, temporary insanity, and
extreme physical discomfort. Hardiness Zone: 9-10
