Description: The showy, colorful fall fruits of the Scarlet Firethorn can’t be beat. This thorny, evergreen shrub is native to southeastern Europe, Turkey, and the Caucasus region. It can become quite large, developing a broad rounded, upright, or spreading habit at maturity.
The evergreen to semi-evergreen leaves are small, glossy, and dark green, turning shades of bronze, dark green, and brown in fall and winter. In spring, it bears clusters of white, musty-smelling flowers that attract bees. The green fruits that follow resemble miniature apples, turning vibrant scarlet or orange late in the season and persisting into winter until eaten by birds.
Scarlet Firethorn prefers full sun for optimal habit, flowering, and fruiting. It adapts to a wide range of well-drained soils and becomes moderately drought tolerant once established. Pruning should be done in late winter to early spring but sparingly, unless trained as espalier or bonsai specimens. Versatile and low-maintenance, it can be used for informal hedging, shrub borders, or trained as a small tree.
