Because this soap is all natural, it doesn’t contain any surfactants which are chemicals added to create lather, the most common chemicals are sodium dodecyl sulfate (SLS) and coco-glucoside. Soapmaking is an ancient tradition in the Middle East. Palestine is said to be the birthplace of olive oil, but also soapmaking. The Nablus soap dates back to the 10th century. Nowadays, this 1000+ year old soapmaking industry which once thrived in Nablus has dwindled from 40 factories to two: Al-Jamal (the Camel) and Al-Muftahein (two keys). These two remaining companies pretty much have followed the same manufacturing process for the last two centuries: cooking, pouring/laying, cutting, stamping, drying, and packaging. There are three ingredients in the soap: virgin olive oil, water, and geli (or sodium hydroxide). This compound is cooked for three days until a thick mixture forms. The mixture is poured where it is allowed to dry before being cut and stamped with the company’s logo. The soap is then stacked into “tananirs” or pyramids and dried for two-three months before being wrapped. Workers can wrap a bar of soap in about three seconds, or 1200 an hour. The packaging is the traditional packaging from an area with limited resources. It endured throughout the Middle Ages. It is said Bedouins brought the soap to the Mediterranean, where it eventually made its way to Queen Elizabeth I in the 14th century and became a favorite of European women who revered it for its nourishing and healing benefits. This soap is: • Organic Soap • 100% natural • 100% biodegradable • Is not tested on animals • Has a Healing and nourishing effect • Respects the natural balance of the skin • Supports the self-healing ability of the skin The Bedouin Company follows in the footsteps of a past generation. Our maternal grandfather was a spice trader in Palestine. In the late 1940s, he was displaced from his home and joined the Bedouins in neighboring Jordan. Back then, most of Jordan was still a desert community – even Amman – so spice trading was conducted from the back of a camel. Our grandfather would go on to establish the first spice shop in downtown Amman. He also managed to fund a very new small producer which would go on to be the best spice producer in Jordan today. After our grandfather’s passing, the shop closed, but the best memories and dreams live on. ***Please note if packages are returned to us because USPS or another delivery company is unable to deliver a package due to: incorrect address, inability to access the building, omission of unit number, and other reasons beyond the seller control, the buyer will be responsible for paying additional shipping costs to re-send.
